[要旨]　 The discovery of cytochrome P450 (P450) enzymes began with individuals studying the metabolism of drugs, steroids, and carcinogens, as well as basic scientists interested in unusual hemoproteins. Today the 57 human P450 genes can be categorized on the basis of their substrates, including sterols, xenobiotics, eicosanoids, fatty acids, and fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). Some P450s are still not characterized with regard to their substrates and are considered “orphans.” Deficiencies in the P450s involved in steroid and vitamin metabolism can cause serious health problems. The understanding of the xenobiotic-metabolizing P450s has greatly facilitated drug development and the prediction of bioavailability and potential drug-drug interactions.
